[느8:1-18, 우리말성경]
1 그러고 나서 일곱째 달이 됐고 그때 이스라엘 자손들은 모두 자기 마을에 있었습니다. 그때 모든 백성들이 '물 문' 앞 광장에 일제히 모였습니다. 그러고는 학사 에스라에게 여호와께서 이스라엘에게 주신 모세의 율법책을 가져와 읽어 달라고 했습니다.
2 그리하여 일곱째 달 1일에 제사장 에스라가 남녀 회중과 알아들을 만한 모든 백성들 앞에 율법책을 들고 나왔습니다.
3 그러고는 '물 문' 앞 광장에서 남녀와 알아들을 만한 모든 사람들에게 이른 아침부터 정오까지 율법을 큰 소리로 낭독했습니다. 그러자 모든 백성들이 그 율법책에 귀를 기울였습니다.
4 학사 에스라는 그 행사를 위해 특별히 만든 높은 나무 강단에 서 있었습니다. 그 오른쪽에는 맛디댜, 스마, 아나야, 우리야, 힐기야, 마아세야가 서고 그 왼쪽에는 브다야, 미사엘, 말기야, 하숨, 하스밧다나, 스가랴, 므술람이 함께 있었습니다.
5 에스라가 백성들 위에 서서 그들이 보는 앞에서 그 책을 펼쳤습니다. 그가 책을 펴자 백성들이 다 일어났습니다.
6 에스라가 위대하신 하나님 여호와를 찬양하자 온 백성이 손을 들고 "아멘, 아멘" 하고 대답하며 얼굴을 땅에 대고 납작 엎드려 여호와께 경배했습니다.
7 예수아, 바니, 세레뱌, 야민, 악굽, 사브대, 호디야, 마아세야, 그리다, 아사랴, 요사밧, 하난, 블라야와 레위 사람들이 거기 서 있는 백성들에게 율법을 설명해 주었습니다.
8 그들이 그 책, 곧 하나님의 율법을 읽고 그 읽은 것을 백성들이 알아듣도록 설명해 주었습니다.
9 온 백성들이 율법의 말씀을 듣고 울었습니다. 그러자 총독 느헤미야와 제사장이자 학사인 에스라와 백성들을 가르치던 레위 사람들이 모든 백성들에게 말했습니다. "이날은 우리 하나님 여호와의 거룩한 날이니 슬퍼하거나 울지 말라."
10 느헤미야가 그들에게 말했습니다. "가서 좋은 음식과 단것을 마시고 아무것도 준비하지 못한 사람들에게도 나누어 주라. 이날은 우리 주의 거룩한 날이니 슬퍼하지 말라. 여호와를 기뻐하는 것이 너희 힘이다."
11 그러자 레위 사람들도 온 백성들을 진정시키며 말했습니다. "오늘은 거룩한 날이니 조용히 하고 슬퍼하지 마시오."
12 그리하여 온 백성들이 가서 먹고 마시고 먹을 것을 나눠 주며 큰 잔치를 벌였습니다. 자기들이 들은 말씀을 이제 깨달았기 때문입니다.
13 그 이튿날 온 백성들의 족장들과 제사장들과 레위 사람들이 모여 율법의 말씀을 들으려고 학사 에스라를 둘러쌌습니다.
14 그들은 율법에 기록된 것으로 여호와께서 모세를 통해 명령하신 것을 발견했습니다. 곧 이스라엘 백성들은 일곱째 달 절기 동안에 초막에서 살라는 것과
15 "산간 지대로 나가서 올리브 나무와 야생 올리브 나무 가지, 은매화나무 가지, 야자나무 가지와 또 다른 활엽수 가지를 가져와 기록된 대로 초막을 지으라" 하는 말씀을 그들이 사는 여러 마을과 예루살렘에 선포하고 전하라는 것이었습니다.
16 그리하여 백성들은 밖으로 나가 가지를 주워 와서 초막을 지었는데 각자 지붕 위에, 뜰 안에, 하나님의 집 뜰 안에, '물 문' 앞 광장에, 에브라임 문 앞 광장에 지었습니다.
17 포로로 잡혀갔다가 돌아온 무리들은 모두 초막을 짓고 그 안에 살았습니다. 눈의 아들 여호수아 시절부터 그날까지 이스라엘 백성들이 이렇게 한 적이 없었기 때문에 그들은 기쁨을 감출 수 없었습니다.
18 에스라는 첫날부터 마지막 날까지 날마다 하나님의 율법책을 낭독했습니다. 그들은 7일 동안 절기를 지켰고 8일째 되는 날에는 규례에 따라 공회를 열었습니다.

[Nehemiah 8:1-18, NLT]
1 all the people assembled with a unified purpose at the square just inside the Water Gate. They asked Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had given for Israel to obey.
2 So on October 8 Ezra the priest brought the Book of the Law before the assembly, which included the men and women and all the children old enough to understand.
3 He faced the square just inside the Water Gate from early morning until noon and read aloud to everyone who could understand. All the people listened closely to the Book of the Law.
4 Ezra the scribe stood on a high wooden platform that had been made for the occasion. To his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah. To his left stood Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.
5 Ezra stood on the platform in full view of all the people. When they saw him open the book, they all rose to their feet.
6 Then Ezra praised the LORD, the great God, and all the people chanted, "Amen! Amen!" as they lifted their hands. Then they bowed down and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.
7 The Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah—then instructed the people in the Law while everyone remained in their places.
8 They read from the Book of the Law of God and clearly explained the meaning of what was being read, helping the people understand each passage.
9 Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were interpreting for the people said to them, "Don't mourn or weep on such a day as this! For today is a sacred day before the LORD your God." For the people had all been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.
10 And Nehemiah continued, "Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don't be dejected and sad, for the joy of the LORD is your strength!"
11 And the Levites, too, quieted the people, telling them, "Hush! Don't weep! For this is a sacred day."
12 So the people went away to eat and drink at a festive meal, to share gifts of food, and to celebrate with great joy because they had heard God's words and understood them.
13 On October 9 the family leaders of all the people, together with the priests and Levites, met with Ezra the scribe to go over the Law in greater detail.
14 As they studied the Law, they discovered that the LORD had commanded through Moses that the Israelites should live in shelters during the festival to be held that month.
15 He had said that a proclamation should be made throughout their towns and in Jerusalem, telling the people to go to the hills to get branches from olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees. They were to use these branches to make shelters in which they would live during the festival, as prescribed in the Law.
16 So the people went out and cut branches and used them to build shelters on the roofs of their houses, in their courtyards, in the courtyards of God's Temple, or in the squares just inside the Water Gate and the Ephraim Gate.
17 So everyone who had returned from captivity lived in these shelters during the festival, and they were all filled with great joy! The Israelites had not celebrated like this since the days of Joshua son of Nun.
18 Ezra read from the Book of the Law of God on each of the seven days of the festival. Then on the eighth day they held a solemn assembly, as was required by law.

1 그달 24일에 이스라엘 백성들이 모두 모여 금식하고 베옷을 입고 머리에 흙먼지를 뒤집어썼습니다.
2 그리고 스스로 모든 이방 사람들과의 관계를 끊고 제자리에 선 채로 자기들의 죄와 자기 조상들의 죄악을 고백했습니다.
3 그들은 또 각자의 자리에서 일어서서 낮 시간의 4분의 1은 그들의 하나님 여호와의 율법책을 읽고 또 4분의 1은 죄를 고백하며 그들의 하나님 여호와께 경배했습니다.
4 레위 사람인 예수아, 바니, 갓미엘, 스바냐, 분니, 세레뱌, 바니, 그나니가 단상에 서서 큰 소리로 그들의 하나님 여호와께 부르짖었습니다.
5 그리고 레위 사람들, 곧 예수아, 갓미엘, 바니, 하삽느야, 세레뱌, 호디야, 스바냐, 브다히야가 백성들을 향해 외쳤습니다. "모두 일어나서 주 너희 하나님을 영원토록 찬양하라! 주의 영광의 이름을 송축합니다. 주께서는 모든 찬송과 찬양 위에 높임을 받으소서.
6 오직 주만이 여호와이십니다. 주께서는 하늘과 하늘 위의 하늘과 그 위에 떠 있는 별 무리와 땅과 그 안에 있는 모든 것, 바다와 그 안에 있는 모든 것을 다 짓고 생명을 주셨으니 하늘의 만물이 주를 경배합니다.

8 그 마음이 주께 신실한 것을 보시고 주께서 가나안 족속과 헷 족속과 아모리 족속과 브리스 족속과 여부스 족속과 기르가스 족속의 땅을 그 자손에게 주시겠다고 그와 언약하셨는데 의로우신 주께서는 주의 약속을 지키셨습니다.
9 주께서는 우리 조상들이 이집트에서 고난받는 것을 보시고 또한 그들이 홍해에서 부르짖는 소리를 들으시고
10 표적과 기사를 바로와 그의 모든 대신들과 그 땅의 모든 백성들에게 보내셨습니다. 이집트 사람들이 그들에게 얼마나 교만하게 굴었는지 주께서 아신 것입니다. 이렇게 해 주께서 오늘의 명성을 얻으셨습니다.
11 주께서는 우리 조상들 앞에서 바다를 갈라 그들이 마른 땅을 딛고 건너가게 하셨지만 그들을 핍박하는 사람들은 깊은 물에 돌을 던지듯 깊음 속에 던지셨습니다.
12 그들을 낮에는 구름기둥으로 인도하시고 밤에는 불기둥으로 갈 길을 비춰 주셨습니다.
13 주께서는 시내 산에 내려오셔서 그들에게 말씀하시고 의로운 규례와 참된 율법과 선한 율례와 계명을 그들에게 주셨으며
14 주의 거룩한 안식을 그들에게 알려 주시고 주의 종 모세를 통해 계명과 율례와 율법을 가르쳐 주셨습니다.
15 그들이 굶주렸을 때 하늘에서 양식을 내려 주셨고 그들이 목말랐을 때 바위에서 물을 내어 먹이셨습니다. 그리하여 주께서 전에 손을 들고 그들에게 주기로 맹세하신 그 땅에 들어가 차지하라고 하셨습니다.
16 그러나 우리 조상들은 교만하고 목이 곧아져서 주의 계명을 듣지 않았습니다.
17 그들은 순종하지 않았고 주께서 그들 가운데 일으키신 기적을 곧 잊었습니다. 그들은 목이 곧아져 거역하고 우두머리를 세워 종살이하던 곳으로 돌아가려고 했습니다. 그러나 주께서는 용서하시는 하나님이요, 은혜와 긍휼이 많으시며 더디 화내시고 사랑이 많으신 분이기에 그들을 저버리지 않으셨습니다.
18 그들이 자기를 위해 송아지 형상을 부어 만들고 '이것이 바로 너를 이집트에서 인도해 낸 너희 하나님이다'라고 하며 하나님을 모독했을 때에도 그랬습니다.
19 주께서는 주의 큰 긍휼로 그들을 광야에 버려두지 않으셨습니다. 낮에는 구름기둥이 떠나지 않고 그 길을 안내했고 밤에는 불기둥으로 그들이 가는 길을 밝히 비춰 주셨습니다.
20 또 주의 선한 영을 주어 그들을 가르치셨습니다. 주께서는 그들의 입에 만나가 끊이지 않게 하시며 그들이 목말라하면 물을 주셨습니다.
21 주께서는 그렇게 40년 동안 광야에서 그들을 돌보셨기에 그들이 부족한 것이 없었습니다. 옷도 낡지 않고 발도 부르트지 않았습니다.
22 주께서는 여러 나라들과 민족들을 우리 조상에게 굴복시켜 주셨고 그 영역을 나눠 주셨습니다. 그리하여 그들은 헤스본 왕 시혼의 땅과 바산 왕 옥의 땅을 차지했습니다.
23 주께서는 그들의 자손들을 하늘의 별처럼 많게 하셨고 그들의 조상들에게 약속하신 땅으로 인도하면서 그 땅을 차지하게 하셨습니다.
24 그리하여 그 자손들은 들어가 그 땅을 차지했습니다. 주께서는 그들 앞에서 그 땅에 살고 있던 가나안 족속들을 굴복시키시고 그 왕들과 그 땅 백성들과 함께 다 그들 손에 넘겨줘 그들 마음대로 하게 하셨습니다.
25 그들은 굳건한 성들과 비옥한 땅을 점령하고 온갖 좋은 것들로 가득한 집들과 파 놓은 우물과 포도원과 올리브 나무 숲과 풍성한 과일나무들을 다 차지했으며 배불리 먹어 살찌고 주님께서 주신 큰 복을 누렸습니다.
26 그럼에도 불구하고 그들은 불순종했고 주를 거역했습니다. 주의 율법을 뒤로 제쳐 두고, 그들을 주께로 돌이키려고 타이르는 예언자들을 죽이기까지 했습니다.
27 그래서 주께서 그들을 그 적들의 손에 넘겨 억압당하게 하셨습니다. 그러나 그들이 고통 가운데 주께 울부짖으면 주께서 하늘에서 들으시고 주의 큰 긍휼을 베푸셔서 그들에게 구원자들을 주시고 그들을 원수의 손에서 구해 내셨습니다.
28 그러나 그들은 평안해지면 또다시 주 앞에 악행을 저질렀습니다. 그때에는 주께서 그들을 원수의 손에 그냥 내버려 둬 그들을 원수의 지배 아래에 두셨습니다. 그러다가도 그들이 다시 돌이켜 주께 부르짖으면 주께서 하늘에서 듣고 주의 긍휼로 그들을 때마다 구해 주셨습니다.
29 주께서는 그들에게 주의 율법으로 돌아오라고 경고하셨지만 그들은 교만해 주의 계명에 순종하지 않고 사람이 지키기만 하면 살 수 있는 주의 율법을 거역하는 죄를 지었습니다. 그들은 고집스럽게도 주께 등을 돌려 대고 목을 뻣뻣이 세우고는 도무지 말을 들으려 하지 않았습니다.
30 주께서는 수년 동안 그들을 참아 주셨고 주의 예언자를 통해 주의 영으로 그들을 타이르셨지만 그들은 들은 척도 하지 않았습니다. 그리하여 주는 그들을 이웃 민족들의 손에 넘기셨습니다.
31 그러나 은혜와 긍휼이 많은 하나님께서는 그 큰 긍휼로 그들을 완전히 멸망시키거나 버리지 않으셨습니다.
32 우리 하나님이시여, 주의 언약과 사랑을 지키시는 위대하고 강하고 두려운 하나님이시여, 앗시리아 왕들이 쳐들어온 날로부터 오늘까지 우리와 우리 왕들과 우리 왕자들과 우리 제사장들과 우리 예언자들과 우리 조상들과 주의 모든 백성들이 겪은 이 모든 고난을 작은 것으로 여기지 마소서.
33 우리에게 이 모든 일이 일어난 것은 주의 잘못이 아닙니다. 우리는 잘못했지만 주께서는 성실히 행하셨습니다.
34 우리 왕들과 우리 지도자들과 우리 제사장들과 우리 조상들은 주의 율법을 따르지도 않았고 주의 계명과 주께서 주신 경고에 신경 쓰지도 않았습니다.
35 그들은 그 나라에 살면서 주가 그들 앞에 두신 넓고 비옥한 땅에서 주가 주신 큰 복을 누리면서도 주를 섬기지도 않고 그 악한 길에서 돌이키지도 않았습니다.
36 그러나 보소서. 우리가 오늘 종이 됐습니다. 주께서 우리 조상들에게 그 땅이 내는 과일과 다른 좋은 것들을 먹으라고 주신 그 땅에서 우리가 종이 됐습니다.
37 우리 죄들 때문에 이 땅의 풍성한 소산이 주께서 우리 죄를 벌하시려고 세우신 이방 왕들의 것이 됐습니다. 그들이 우리 몸과 우리 가축들을 자기들 좋을 대로 다스리니 우리가 너무 괴롭습니다."
38 "이 모든 것을 생각하며 우리가 언약을 굳게 세웁니다. 이것을 문서로 남기고 우리 지도자들과 우리 레위 사람들과 우리 제사장들이 서명을 합니다."

[Nehemiah 9:1-38, NLT]
1 On October 31 the people assembled again, and this time they fasted and dressed in burlap and sprinkled dust on their heads.
2 Those of Israelite descent separated themselves from all foreigners as they confessed their own sins and the sins of their ancestors.
3 They remained standing in place for three hours while the Book of the Law of the LORD their God was read aloud to them. Then for three more hours they confessed their sins and worshiped the LORD their God.
4 The Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Kenani—stood on the stairway of the Levites and cried out to the LORD their God with loud voices.
5 Then the leaders of the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah—called out to the people: "Stand up and praise the LORD your God, for he lives from everlasting to everlasting!" Then they prayed:
"May your glorious name be praised! May it be exalted above all blessing and praise!
6 "You alone are the LORD. You made the skies and the heavens and all the stars. You made the earth and the seas and everything in them. You preserve them all, and the angels of heaven worship you.
7 "You are the LORD God, who chose Abram and brought him from Ur of the Chaldeans and renamed him Abraham.
8 When he had proved himself faithful, you made a covenant with him to give him and his descendants the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites, and Girgashites. And you have done what you promised, for you are always true to your word.
9 "You saw the misery of our ancestors in Egypt, and you heard their cries from beside the Red Sea.
10 You displayed miraculous signs and wonders against Pharaoh, his officials, and all his people, for you knew how arrogantly they were treating our ancestors. You have a glorious reputation that has never been forgotten.
11 You divided the sea for your people so they could walk through on dry land! And then you hurled their enemies into the depths of the sea. They sank like stones beneath the mighty waters.
12 You led our ancestors by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night so that they could find their way.
13 "You came down at Mount Sinai and spoke to them from heaven. You gave them regulations and instructions that were just, and decrees and commands that were good.
14 You instructed them concerning your holy Sabbath. And you commanded them, through Moses your servant, to obey all your commands, decrees, and instructions.
15 "You gave them bread from heaven when they were hungry and water from the rock when they were thirsty. You commanded them to go and take possession of the land you had sworn to give them.
16 "But our ancestors were proud and stubborn, and they paid no attention to your commands.
17 They refused to obey and did not remember the miracles you had done for them. Instead, they became stubborn and appointed a leader to take them back to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God of forgiveness, gracious and merciful, slow to become angry, and rich in unfailing love. You did not abandon them,
18 even when they made an idol shaped like a calf and said, 'This is your god who brought you out of Egypt!' They committed terrible blasphemies.
19 "But in your great mercy you did not abandon them to die in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud still led them forward by day, and the pillar of fire showed them the way through the night.
20 You sent your good Spirit to instruct them, and you did not stop giving them manna from heaven or water for their thirst.
21 For forty years you sustained them in the wilderness, and they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out, and their feet did not swell!
22 "Then you helped our ancestors conquer kingdoms and nations, and you placed your people in every corner of the land. They took over the land of King Sihon of Heshbon and the land of King Og of Bashan.
23 You made their descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and brought them into the land you had promised to their ancestors.
24 "They went in and took possession of the land. You subdued whole nations before them. Even the Canaanites, who inhabited the land, were powerless! Your people could deal with these nations and their kings as they pleased.
25 Our ancestors captured fortified cities and fertile land. They took over houses full of good things, with cisterns already dug and vineyards and olive groves and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate until they were full and grew fat and enjoyed themselves in all your blessings.
26 "But despite all this, they were disobedient and rebelled against you. They turned their backs on your Law, they killed your prophets who warned them to return to you, and they committed terrible blasphemies.
27 So you handed them over to their enemies, who made them suffer. But in their time of trouble they cried to you, and you heard them from heaven. In your great mercy, you sent them liberators who rescued them from their enemies.
28 "But as soon as they were at peace, your people again committed evil in your sight, and once more you let their enemies conquer them. Yet whenever your people turned and cried to you again for help, you listened once more from heaven. In your wonderful mercy, you rescued them many times!
29 "You warned them to return to your Law, but they became proud and obstinate and disobeyed your commands. They did not follow your regulations, by which people will find life if only they obey. They stubbornly turned their backs on you and refused to listen.
30 In your love, you were patient with them for many years. You sent your Spirit, who warned them through the prophets. But still they wouldn't listen! So once again you allowed the peoples of the land to conquer them.
31 But in your great mercy, you did not destroy them completely or abandon them forever. What a gracious and merciful God you are!
32 "And now, our God, the great and mighty and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of unfailing love, do not let all the hardships we have suffered seem insignificant to you. Great trouble has come upon us and upon our kings and leaders and priests and prophets and ancestors—all of your people—from the days when the kings of Assyria first triumphed over us until now.
33 Every time you punished us you were being just. We have sinned greatly, and you gave us only what we deserved.
34 Our kings, leaders, priests, and ancestors did not obey your Law or listen to the warnings in your commands and laws.
35 Even while they had their own kingdom, they did not serve you, though you showered your goodness on them. You gave them a large, fertile land, but they refused to turn from their wickedness.
36 "So now today we are slaves in the land of plenty that you gave our ancestors for their enjoyment! We are slaves here in this good land.
37 The lush produce of this land piles up in the hands of the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. They have power over us and our livestock. We serve them at their pleasure, and we are in great misery."
38 The people responded, "In view of all this, we are making a solemn promise and putting it in writing. On this sealed document are the names of our leaders and Levites and priests."

25 르훔, 하삽나, 마아세야,

28 이 밖에 그 나머지 백성들, 곧 제사장들, 레위 사람들, 성전 문지기들, 노래하는 사람들, 느디님 사람들, 또 하나님의 율법을 위해 다른 민족들과 스스로 구별한 모든 사람들과 그 아내들과 그 아들딸들, 지각과 통찰력이 있는 사람들 모두가
29 그 형제 귀족들과 마음을 같이해 하나님의 종 모세를 통해 주신 하나님의 율법을 따르고 우리 주 여호와의 모든 계명과 규례와 율례를 잘 지키기로 맹세했으며 그것을 어기면 저주를 달게 받겠다고 맹세했습니다.
30 그들은 또한 맹세하기를 '우리 딸을 그 땅의 민족에게 시집보내거나 우리 아들들을 그들의 딸과 결혼시키지 않겠다'라고 했습니다.
31 또 다른 민족이 안식일에 물건이나 곡식을 팔러 오더라도 안식일과 거룩한 날에는 우리가 사지 않을 것이며 또 7년마다 땅을 쉬게 하고 모든 빚을 탕감하겠다고 했습니다.
32 우리는 또 우리 하나님의 집을 섬기기 위해 해마다 의무적으로 3분의 1세겔을 바치는 것을 규례화해서
33 진설병과 정기적으로 드리는 곡식제사와 번제, 안식일과 초하루와 정해진 명절에 드리는 제물과 거룩한 물건들과 이스라엘을 위한 속죄제와 우리 하나님의 집의 모든 일을 하는 데 쓰기로 했습니다.
34 우리 제사장들과 레위 사람들과 백성들은 제단의 땔감 드리는 일에 제비를 뽑아 각 종족에 따라 해마다 정해진 시간에 우리 하나님의 집에 나무를 가져와 율법에 기록된 대로 우리 하나님 여호와의 제단 위에서 태우게 했고
35 또 해마다 우리 땅의 첫 수확물과 모든 과일나무의 첫 열매를 여호와의 집에 가져오게 했으며
36 율법에 기록된 대로 우리 장자들과 우리 가축의 처음 난 것, 곧 우리 양 떼와 우리 소 떼의 처음 난 것들을 우리 하나님의 집에 가져와 우리 하나님의 집을 섬기는 제사장들에게 주기로 했습니다.
37 또한 우리는 우리가 드릴 예물로 우리 밀의 첫 수확물과 모든 종류의 나무 열매와 새 포도주와 기름의 첫 수확물을 제사장들에게 가져와 우리 하나님의 집 방에 들이고 우리 땅에서 난 것의 십일조를 레위 사람들에게 가져오기로 했습니다. 레위 사람들은 우리가 일하는 모든 성들에서 십일조를 받아야 할 사람들이기 때문입니다.
38 레위 사람들이 십일조를 받을 때는 아론의 자손인 제사장이 레위 사람들과 함께 있어야 하고 레위 사람들은 받은 십일조의 십일조를 우리 하나님의 집에 있는 방들, 곧 창고에 두기로 했습니다.
39 이스라엘 백성들과 레위 사람들은 자기가 드린 곡물과 새 포도주와 기름을 거룩한 물건이 보관돼 있는 방, 곧 성전을 섬기는 제사장들과 성전 문지기들과 노래하는 사람들이 있는 방으로 가져가도록 했습니다. 이렇게 해 우리가 우리 하나님의 집을 소홀히 하지 않을 것을 다짐했습니다.

28 Then the rest of the people—the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, Temple servants, and all who had separated themselves from the pagan people of the land in order to obey the Law of God, together with their wives, sons, daughters, and all who were old enough to understand—
29 joined their leaders and bound themselves with an oath. They swore a curse on themselves if they failed to obey the Law of God as issued by his servant Moses. They solemnly promised to carefully follow all the commands, regulations, and decrees of the LORD our Lord:
30 "We promise not to let our daughters marry the pagan people of the land, and not to let our sons marry their daughters.
31 "We also promise that if the people of the land should bring any merchandise or grain to be sold on the Sabbath or on any other holy day, we will refuse to buy it. Every seventh year we will let our land rest, and we will cancel all debts owed to us.
32 "In addition, we promise to obey the command to pay the annual Temple tax of one-eighth of an ounce of silver for the care of the Temple of our God.
33 This will provide for the Bread of the Presence; for the regular grain offerings and burnt offerings; for the offerings on the Sabbaths, the new moon celebrations, and the annual festivals; for the holy offerings; and for the sin offerings to make atonement for Israel. It will provide for everything necessary for the work of the Temple of our God.
34 "We have cast sacred lots to determine when—at regular times each year—the families of the priests, Levites, and the common people should bring wood to God's Temple to be burned on the altar of the LORD our God, as is written in the Law.
35 "We promise to bring the first part of every harvest to the LORD's Temple year after year—whether it be a crop from the soil or from our fruit trees.
36 We agree to give God our oldest sons and the firstborn of all our herds and flocks, as prescribed in the Law. We will present them to the priests who minister in the Temple of our God.
37 We will store the produce in the storerooms of the Temple of our God. We will bring the best of our flour and other grain offerings, the best of our fruit, and the best of our new wine and olive oil. And we promise to bring to the Levites a tenth of everything our land produces, for it is the Levites who collect the tithes in all our rural towns.
38 "A priest—a descendant of Aaron—will be with the Levites as they receive these tithes. And a tenth of all that is collected as tithes will be delivered by the Levites to the Temple of our God and placed in the storerooms.
39 The people and the Levites must bring these offerings of grain, new wine, and olive oil to the storerooms and place them in the sacred containers near the ministering priests, the gatekeepers, and the singers.

포로 귀환을 이끌었던 지도자들의 공통된 목표는 제사장 나라의 회복과 재건이었습니다. 느헤미야는 모든 백성이 모일 수 있도록 하고, 에스라는 그들에게 율법을 가르치며 멋진 동역을 이룹니다. 에스라가 백성들에게 율법을 읽어줄 때 레위인들은 백성들 속으로 들어가 그룹을 지어 백성들을 가르쳤을 것입니다. 이는 에스라가 가르치는 율법이 백성들에게 더 쉽게 이해되고 전달되도록 하기 위한 레위인들의 섬김이었습니다. 아마도 포로 생활로 모국어인 히브리어에 익숙하지 않은 이들에게 아람어로 율법을 해석해 주는 일도 함께 이루어졌을 것입니다.
그때의 모습을 그림으로 그려본다면 여기저기에서 들리는 다양한 소리와 움직임으로 현장은 시끄럽고 분주하게 보였을 수 있습니다. 그러나 그 자리는 살아 계신 하나님의 말씀이 전달되는 소리로 가득했고, 생명의 말씀을 듣고 회개하며 우는 백성들의 소리로 가득했습니다. 교회의 현장에도 성경을 통독하는 소리, 통성경을 가르치는 소리가 가득하기를 소망합니다.
